Default Situation critical - 11-10-2005, 12:41 PM

I sit here on my brothers computer trying to deal with a virus question i've never heard of. When ever he, or I, open IE the homepage is instanly changed and is redirected to a website containing a virus. You can try every homepage fix known to computing and it will not work.

Something along the lines of

DO NOT CLICK!
EDIT: PM for info (just saving the asshats from themselves here)

It actually downloads three viruses Downloader-afh Trojan, Adclicker-aj.gen trojan, and Adclicker-di trojan.

McAfee seems unable to clean up this mess. Though it says its catching the viruses, IE is still unusable. FireFox works, but isnt his cup of tea, and it seems a bad plan to just say fuck IE because some virus jacked it up. Esspecially since it seems to be messing up his internet connection.

Mcafee only has a catalog that shows the adclickers, that are low risk.
Any info welcome.

PS. I moved and im without internet for a while. Hense why you've enjoyed my silence.

That is one of about 900 reset the homepage tricks i tried. I even tried setting the site to restricted in the internet options but it still reset, redirected, and re-downloaded.

do you know the sites exact url ?

if so you can try to search the registry for entries that match it ...

run regedit from start mean and use find to search for site name... if you find, delete all instances shadey site.

And seeing how you live in Redmond just take a walk to Microsoft with your computer and show them their programs suck.

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

it's a free online scanner from Kaspersky, it should find almost anything. It takes a while to complete but it might help.

I beat the fucker.

I ran an online virus scanner provided by [url=http://housecall.trendmicro.com/:933db]trendmicro[/url:933db], with msn internet explorer since fire fox wouldnt run it. It id'd two viruses and was able to delete one but not the other. The other i hunted down in the system and was able to rename. That rendered it inert, i then moved it, since it was write protected and undeletable, to a flash memory stick. I used cut and paste to do that. Once on the memory stick it was deletable, if it hadnt been, i had planned to basically format the flash stick.

I then reset the homepage to not suffer this all again, and verified it on the block list. Thanks for the suggestions. I also learned a valuable lesson about having two internet browsers, if my bro hadnt had msnIE he would have been fucked since firefox wouldnt run the damn internet virus scan.

Well, this will be the last of my internet visits for a while. Im going to have to start hurting my room mate for not calling to get it hooked up in his name.
