I know you're thinking hard rock/ heavy metal kinda stuff but...

the guitar solo in Down by the River by Neil Young is awesome

And a LOT of the Yardbirds stuff is INCREDIBLY awesome, with Clapton and all. Try Over, Under, Sideways, Down.

Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughan with BB King and others

Stepping Out/Rice Pudding by Joe Bonamassa

Bring it on Home by Led Zeppelin (Live version from How the West Was Won)

Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd (especially the last half)

Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd

Warren Haynes has some pretty good stuff, don't know about any sweet solos in particular though

If Guitars Ruled the World - Dickey Betts I think, maybe look for it by Gov't Mule

it is a good guitar solo in the middle, not the best, and the beginning of the song is really weird. I'm glad somebody else noticed the sweetness of that song though

I agree with Jotun completely. Don't put on Hendrix SSB, as a guitar player and music theorist I just find that annoying...

Definatly need a Pink Floyd song on there, comfortably numb for solos, perhaps money for all around guitar work and arrangement.

John Petrucci (sp?) is a must.

I'm burned out on Zeppelin solos, but thats a personal thing so put him on there.

Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson, that is the guitar song; he couldn't even record it in one go, took three sessions and splicing, great song still.

Eruption isn't the best Eddie Van Halen solo, Def hot for teacher, Panama is short and sweet too.

My personal favorit Deep Purple song is Knockin' at Your Back Door.

Even though it's simple, Carol of the Bells by Trans Siberian Orchestra is pretty much amazing just because of the guitar runs at the end.

I hope that helps some. I know there are a lot more which deserve named but not that will fit on a cd....too bad
