Default Canada blames U.S. for gun violence - 12-27-2005, 06:37 PM

[url:fe467]http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/americas/12/27/canada.crime.ap/index.html[/url:fe467]

[quote:fe467]"It's a sign that the lack of gun laws in the U.S. is allowing guns to flood across the border that are literally being used to kill people in the streets of Toronto,"[/quote:fe467]
[quote:fe467]Martin, who says up to half of the gun crimes in Canada involve weapons brought in illegally from the United States, raised the smuggling problem when he met with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in October.[/quote:fe467]

And the US puts pressure on our government about marijuana cause it could get into the US.

It's funny. Martin says he'll implement legislation to ban hand guns, but what good does it do if there are guns flooding across the border? Does he thing people getting guns illegally will try to register their guns? Doesn't make sense.

He says in that article, half of the guns used come from the states. Maybe if they put the money to trying to stop guns coming into the country it would make a lot more sense.

The pressure martin is putting on the states is all show. That's really all they have to go on at this point for the election. they will try to protray the Conservatives as too buddy buddy with the states, but in reality, the liberals are no different.

Let me see if I got this right, your government is blaming Canadian crime, committed by Canadians, on the United States.

[quote="Toronto Mayor David Miller":345dd]There are neighborhoods in Toronto where young people face barriers of poverty, discrimination and don't have real hope and opportunity. The kind of programs that we once took for granted in Canada that would reach out to young people have systematically disappeared over the past decade and I think that gun violence is a symptom of a much bigger problem.[/quote:345dd]

Did someone in the USA stop funding the programs?

And then theres this

[quote:d9fd2]John Thompson, a security analyst with the Toronto-based Mackenzie Institute, says the number of guns smuggled from the United States is a problem, but that Canada has a gang problem -- not a gun problem -- and that Canada should stop pointing the finger at the United States.

"It's a cop out. It's an easy way of looking at one symptom rather than addressing a whole disease," Thompson said.[/quote:d9fd2]

Find another issue to pander to the public about MARTIN - we dont give a shit. I mean, they do obviously. We dont.

Canada has had gang problems since the early 80's.(Toronto/Montreal) BUT the GUN PROBLEMS related to gangs and the massive increase in gun related homicides has risen ever since the illegal flow of American handguns have come in. rolleyes: .........

Actually we have more gun laws on the books than at any time in our history. Was this a problem in past decades when we had fewer laws? Just curious.

BTW - if half of the gun crimes are done with guns that are brought in "illegally" from the US, what are the other half commited with? Legal guns brought in from somewhere else? how many gun manufacturers are in Canada? Aren't most guns brought in from somewhere else?

You can not single out the blame to just the "border police".. besdies US deputys are involved in that as well. many beleive the illegal gun trade is being supported by the firearm companys themselves.

I can see the board meeting at Smith and Wesson.

"Mr. Chairman I purpose that we sell a lot of illegal guns to criminals in Canada so we can cut our profits in half to get tax cuts”

Like Tobacco Companies trying to get under-age smokers?

They'd do it if it worked, of course, they're in it to make money, but there are plenty of other places to get MUCH cheaper guns than modern american manufacturers.

You can't blame the manufacturers of new guns for this, criminals would be much more likely to buy a used, or surplus gun that they could get easier and cheaper. (Except maybe rich gangsta rappers that might want something in chrome.)

It might be that Gun Dealership laws are too lax? It could be, but I dont think Americans should have their rights infringed on just to stop crime in Canada.

Sorry, I must have missed this post the first time around. Anyway, If Canada has had a rise in gun violence only in the last few years it makes me wonder, could it be due to Canada's newer, more restrictive gun ownership laws? I can't remember the details but didn't Canada pass a registration program a few years back? And i seem to remember they banned certain types of weapons and maybe even confiscated some after the folks registered them. This old brain is fuzzy so I might be wrong about that. Anyway, it would seem to me that an increase in the flow of illegal guns could be a result of those laws, and also the crooks assume that a law abiding guy would not have a gun so he feels bolder.

Of course, none of this may be related. It could be the bad guys are just shooting each other more because they've all been playing too many video games and watching violent movies.
