Ha, gotta love Asian professors -

Class was hilarious this morning. My math professor is from South Korea and he can hardly speak english well at all. For example, instead of squaring x, he "scares x" etc. He puts a period after every line in the equation...for what reason, I have no idea.
A kid asked in class today, "How would you solve the problem if that 4 was a 3?" (it would change the problem dramatically. it was a legit question). The professor was so confused. He didn't know what the student was saying. After 2 mins of trying to explain to the professor what his question was, he just gave up and said "nevermind...go on."
So i got this letter in my e-mail account lol:
[quote:d7194]Try to solve the problems in the suggested homework.
If you have any trouble, stop by my office(9 McAllister) in my office hours(1:00pm - 2:00pm Tuesday, or Wednesday).
If your schedule conflict my office hours, you can make an appointment by email.
I didn't understand the question by one student. I am really sorry that. However some students helped me. I appreciated it.
Although I don't understand your question, don't give up asking to me because I want all of you to get pass or get a good grade in math 21.

oOo:
At my dad's uni it is absolutely necessary for tutors and lecturers to take an advanced english class if english isn't their first language. The university funds it as well...
People pay alot of money for their education at tertiary level - Shouldn't be paying to be taught by a guy who you can barely understand. I mean, If I were getting emails like that I'd be complaining....

unfortunately, most of the Math department are foreigners. There is a huge asian population here at campus as well. I thought taking spanish in highschool would help me out. I should have taken japanese or something ha.

kinda weird considering he is teaching at one of the "finer" universities. with his command of the english language in the shitter, id be pissed as a student. ive had issues understanding off shore partners when doing engineering proposals and requirements staging. you always hope to find someone who can speak english...

lol after i showed the kid across the hall the e-mail he told me about what he did yesterday in class. He asked a question in his math course and the professor understood, tried to tell him the answer, but my friend couldn't understand him. So he got up and started yelling at the professor saying how he should be able to speak english and how this is bullshit that he can't understand a professor that is supposed to be able to teach.
getting up and yelling at the professor seems a little to disrespectful to me oOo: . He had a point, but he didn't have to make an ass of himself infront of the class.

Yeah, our city is a straight up cultural melting pot...In Auckland nowadays every second person is Asian, usually Chinese or Korean...At uni, most of the tutors aren't white but of other races and they still make them take english courses. It's kinda fucked up that you pay for that shit and they give you that guy, that would really bother me.

Our math dept at JMU is the same way, they are all foreigners. I have an Indian teacher and my brother has a Chinese math teacher and they are both hard to understand.
Tripper, I think that idea with the advanced english classes is a great idea, how can we expect to get our moneys worth if the teachers can't speak english?

I had one teacher who could barely speak english...I was pissed off...this is an english school and every teacher should be fluid in english...or go teach somewhere where another language is predominant. It's ok in normal life...but certain jobs should be a guarentee.
too bad the President of the united states speaks broken english too.
