Default XGS pulls yet another llama - 09-06-2002, 08:10 PM

XGS Clients,
We have noticed that some people in the MOH servers have been setting there sv_maxrate higher than allowed so this was part of our Banwidth increase. It came to my attention this morning so what I have done is added the maxrate into the command line to test for the next 24 hours if this will reduce the unusual banwidth usage we have been seeing with MOH. If this works then we may be able to actually lower the prices to the first rate that you signed up with but the only way we can actually test this is to monitor it for at least 24 hours. Please do not edit your server.cfg and add the sv_maxrate line leave it as is as we want to get a accurate amount from this. If you need to edit your server.cfg please download the one from your ftp so you dont overwrite the one we changed. Thank you for your patients and we are working hard to get our prices back to what they were before.

sv_maxrate what is it?

sv_maxrate is the amount allowed to transfer at a given time. The standard for the maxrate is 6000 as which level out the amount of information sent and recieved at one time per client. By setting the maxrate up DOES NOT lower pings or lag. Its just allows the people on faster lines to send and recieve some information quicker. By setting higher limit gives the ability for lower ping times players the advantage.

An sv-maxrate of 6000 for a hosted server, especially one by a company that says they have the best connnection on the net is a llama trick at it's worst.

What kind of shit are they pulling here. Trying to squeeze a 16 man server into a 768k connection? What are these guys using DSL to host their servers? This is stupid.

Tell me RudeDog , do you think the aa.com server should be choked down to 768k? I know they a trying to blow smoke up our ass over here as well.

XGS charges more then any of our other server host companies, and they have the poorest performance so far.

Default sv_maxrate - 09-06-2002, 08:56 PM

Doggie

I have a server with xgamingservers.com (XGS) and
have thouroughly tested many settings for sv_maxrate

6000 makes the server chug
7000 removes most lag
8000 is smooth
9000 - 25,000 no increase in player speed at all

Barry is right, the only people that notice any difference
are player that are sitting right on top of the server
or players with their own T1 or better

You should know what you are talking about
before you go accusing people of "Pulling Shit"

I am the first person to bitch about my server
being slow. If increasing the sv_maxrate
decreased lar or improved overall gameplay
I would want it. I am paying for the server myself
so I want the most for my money

As you said yourself 6000 makes the server chug. Thats what im complaining about.

And i have 7 servers from 3 companies, and the lowest maxrate i will use is 8000

Since you also have an XGS server BallBuster, are you going to be happy with it at 6000 maxrate?

I pay alot for my servers as well, and the XGS server has had more issues over the last 2 months then any of our others. Plus it costs more per player then the others.

And No im not very happy with the quality of their servers at this time.

lol you need to loosen up.

And the letter i posted above came to us 2 days ago, then our max rate went from 8000 down to 6000, as stated in the letter. We notice a big difference in the 2 settings. This is why the XGS server is the only one we use that we dont have full control of the box.

I dont mind talking with you but im not gonna get in a shouting match with you.

p.s. Max rate makes a big difference when your trying to make the server play good for your players when they are based all over the world. We have over 100 members many of our players are in the western US and play on the UK server , and vise versa. Maxrate is crucial for us. We have found as you have that 8000 is perfect.

Doggie

How is it that you dont have "Full Control" over the box?

The only limitation i see is the maxrate now being set
at 8000. Other than that there are no limitations

And Yup....

Anything below 8000 is very laggy

I was not trying to get in a pissing match with you
You should have called them and asked them what
was going on. Thats what I did when I saw lag happening.

They explained that they were testing the best maxrate settings
with a few server admins to come up with the best number
and that number was 8000. Like I said before, increasing
this number did nothing to stop lag even with a full server

Whenever I see lag spikes (rarely) I immediately call XGS
to see whats up. Things have been pretty smooth with
them so I am happy for now. That is as long as it
stays like this

No hard feelings dude.....

On our other servers we have Full control, as in desktop access down to hard drives and all.

XGS gives us an on/off switch and ftp. Not much more.

What is bugging me i think is the price hike, and then this letter stating Moh uses to much bandwidth. The price of there 16 man server is almost $20 more a month then one of my other hosts.
