09-06-2002, 08:19 PM
Hi, I'm new to online gaming and need to know about ping. How much does it affect my playing.I know that lower is better, but what is the difference between 50 and 350.Are there any ways to improve it? and are there any strategies I can use while playing to compensate ?
Thanks, hughcrain

Your ping is going to affect the amount of data that you recieve from the server you are playing. So if you have a high ping you are going to get less information and everything is going to be very choppy. The models are jump around instead of moving smoothly. It makes it harder to aim at your target because there is a bit of delay. To compensate you can lead your target a bit (aim a bit in front of where your target is moving instead of where you see him). There is not a whole lot you can do to improve your ping other than increasing the speed of your internet connection. Make sure that you shut down any programs that are running in the background that might be using part of your bandwidth.

I'm using 56K, which connects to my ISP @ 49K. However, When I reconfigure my modem in windows,I can get it to connect @ 115K. But my ping remains the same.

well your ping is going to be pretty high(laggy) with a dial up, the best advice I can give you is get a bigger pipe(heh, pipe)
but some tips would be to stay in smaller games, that are generally have the lower pings. You can turn all the graphic settings down to there lowest.
Also make sure your computer is up to date, Good graphics card, decent cpu, enough ram.
All this will make your game run smoother(lower the fps) but you will still be proned to lag, with a dial up.

If you can afford it, Cable or DSL is the way to go. Some DSL providers have deals that wouldn't cost more than AOL for a month, usually 20 - 25 bucks. Some are a little more, like 30 - 40. You can get a solid 40kpbs with DSL, and sometimes as much as 500. With cable, you usually have anywhere inbetween 300 - 1000kbps.
Also, depending on what server you play on will determine how much lag you have. On the AA.COM server, I have 20 - 50 ping. But, on other public servers, I may have 250. This depends on the host as much as your connection; if the server host has a crappy connection, then you probably will too, no matter how fast your connection is.

When I was playing at 56K, my pings were generally above 300. NoOw on cable they are usually lower than 100. I didn't see choppy performance at 300, but I did experience poor performance. Basically I was shooting at ghosts, or at where the people HAD been. I sucked, and I got cable and now life is good. If you want to improve your speed, try doing a search on the internet for "increase modem speed" or "modem tweak", something like that. Good luck!

apparently -- Not sure on how legit this thread is "http://www.forumplanet.com/PlanetMedalOfHonor/topic.asp?fid=5221&tid=791275" but according to one of the Devolpers, the packet size has been reduced a lot, thus, making the game more playable for 56ks, Although broadband is still reccomended.
