just a quick question and probobly a very nieve one as i am a noob when it comes to networking. my question: the comp that will be the server is connected to a router and the os is xp pro. now, can i hook up a different computer running windows 98 to the router or do both computers have to use the same os? (ie. both xp or both 98)

hook what ever os the other PC has any Os will work 98 and above. Thats for home networking and lan.

To do the internet sharing you have to do other things, but just connect the machines to the hub and setup the configurations (indentification and work group) then on the XP machine go to My Network Places or what ever it says, and make a new network, name it the same thing you put both pc's under the network configs work group (lets just say LAN). So the network would be Lan in this example. Then restart both machines, if you did everything right they should be hooked up, but make sure you put file/print sharing and set up the password or it wont work.
