Florida Panthers winger Richard Zednik is in stable condition today after teammate Olli Jokinen, upended on the ice, inadvertently sliced open Zednik's neck during the third period of last night's 5-3 loss in Buffalo against the Sabres.

It doesn't happen often, but one wonders why players don't wear throat guards. I can see the argument against visors (i.e., the player can't see as well), but you can buy throat guards that are very unobtrusive. There's really no reason for not wearing one, other than looking cool for the puckbunnies.
Glad to read that Zednik will be OK. He's lucky he skated directly to the bench after the slash. He definitely would have bled out.
I remember as a young fella watching Clint Malarchuk get his throat slashed. This was just as bad.
