Default Good deal? - 04-03-2008, 06:06 PM

Good deal for $500.00?

I've been using AMD forever and have not built a pc in about 3 years. I saw this bundle for $500 and wondered what you guys thought of it seeing I haven't been keeping up on pc technology as of late.

XFX nForce 680i LT SLI Motherboard

Intel C2D E8400 3.0GHz OEM

OCZ Platinum 2048MB PC6400

Maxtor L01F300 300GB Hard Drive

Ultra E-Torque ATX Mid-Tower Case

PowerUp GEN-6802 800-Watt Power Supply

Let me know what u guys think. I will be building my next pc for gaming. Thank you very much.

I would rather stick my cock into a blender than trust one of those piece of shit nforce motherboards. Read so many horror stories about the sata shitting out or people getting 4 or 5 "doa" motherboards in a row. I dont even think the 680's support the 45nm intel cpu's. 780\790 series are meant to be much better and have future cpu support.

Try and snag an intel based p35 motherboard. The rest of the spec looks good though im not sure about that psu, better to stick to something like an antec or ocz or coolermaster.

Whats the video card and the OS?

Damn, having 2nd thoughts about that mobo now.

That psu is shady, but I have an antec 550 in my current system that I can use.

I also have an XFX 8800GT so I'm decent there.

OS is xp/sp2 32 bit

You know you're shit Gerv so I'll think about it but fuck waiting around RMA'ing mobo's

Have a look at hardforum theres a long post about the 680i

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1132703

Asus p5k\p5k premium are really good boards. Premium has wifi and an option in the bios to reduce voltage "droop" on the cpu when overclocking. vanilla p5k has the option but it doesn't do anything, so for overclocking the premium is much better.

Btw how many pins is the main atx connector on your psu? Theyre all 24 pin nowadays.

Pretty old posts there, and the current boards seem more stable. Also there was no mention of the XFX boards, just EVGA.

The main reason I'm leaning towards it is because it handle a quad core when I need to upgrade again.

Right now I'm running an opteron 170 on a socket 939 Asus A8N-Sli Deluxe board. I'm guessing they are starting to phase out the socket 939 boards so no more upgrading that.

680i boards afaik dont have the neccessary power circuitry to handle 45nm cpu's. Thats one of the check marks the 780/790 have in their favour. Also it wouldn't matter much on the make of mobo, if they use the same chipset they will likely have the same problems.

- Support Intel® next generation 45nm Multi-Core CPU
- NVIDIA nForce® 780i SLI™

^ none of that on the 680i so upgrades for cpu would be limited to older and hotter running cpu's.

Is the bundle giving you much of a discount over buying components individually? According to asus site the p35 boards support .45nm cpu's and price wise theyre pretty good.

Was looking on newwegg, for $522 you could get:

asus p5k
2 gig pc 6400 ram
lian li aluminium case
e8400
320gb hdd

probably get cheaper than that looking around though.
