If the store youre buying from has a mobo/cpu sale, then youll be getting the MotherBoard they give you. Lol.
However, Ive found ASUS boards to work gangbusters with AMD products.
As far as RAM, stick with SDRAM if you dont have DDR cash. If you do, go with 256 DDR (I guess it equals 512 SDRAM)
Also, all of that wont mean shit if you have a SHIT vid-card.
Cheers.

i run a p4 1.8 gig..clocked to about 1985...shade over a gig of ddr memory..if you runnin xp youll be surprised how much memory it will eat...as for the processor..everybody has a preference..i happen to think pentium is more stable...but someone will surely disagree with me..comes right down to it their both very good in there own right...whatever you decide...DONT GO WEAK ON THE MEMORY!!!!...at least 512...if not more....and like the man said...without a great video card...your kickin your own butt...i run a radeon 7200.. it has 64 meg of on board ddr...im thinking of upgrading it...ive had for a while...hope some of this helped a little...BUTCHER

For a processor, get the AMD Athlon XP. They run like hell for a great price. About the only drawback that i know of is they tend to run on the hot side. Just make sure you have ample cooling and you should be trouble free. Also, the AMD's need a decent power supply so don't neglect this area. I have an AMD Athlon XP 1400 and never had any trouble with it and as a matter of fact, i'm upgrading my second machine with either the 1800, or 2000 XP. So for you i recommend:
Athlon XP 1800
ASUS A7V333 Mobo
PC2100 DDR Memory (at least 256Mb)
Enermax 300W or 350W power supply
The world is my urinal

I just built an AMD system with an Asus board. It has worked flawlessly so far. Good features, etc. They make quality boards, but so does soyo. If you dont have to have the top of the line mobo, you can get an Asus pretty reasonably. Also, if you arent going to get DDR ram, there is no reason to spend big on the mobo. I would get at least a 266fsb mobo with 512 DDR2700. That, with the xp1800 will be a huge jump over the machine you are using now. You will definately need to upgrade your vid card too - there are some very good cards in the <$100 range right now. I would guess that your current vid card is onboard, if so you will have to buy one regardless.

an AMD 1800 does the job perfectly, there is no point spend the extra money on an xp proccesor the only run something like 3.4mhz faster than the 1800, i would just over clock it aswell, AMD are pretty cheap processors and well worth the money.

Most comp stores hav barebone pc's
They have the Mainboard and prossesor and power supply and comp case but u need to put your ram and HDD in. Depending on the packadge it might come with other things like sound and vid cards. but its the best way to go. I bought one a year ago and it came with an asus MB and AMD 1 gig CPU.
This usually costs about 300 but its worth it.

I'm curious just what the hell m@d child is talking about...
Yeah, don't overlook your vid card too man, it takes more then just a processor to make a decent system.

Not entirely true. Some games are more processor intensive than others. It really depends how bad the video card is. I upgraded from PIII 733 to a XP2200 with new ram, etc., but the same vid card (gf2ti) and tripled my fps while moving all my settings up (almost all to max).
