Strange case of low fps -
10-05-2002, 02:17 PM
Everything was fine until switched my internet provider from cable to dsl. All of a sudden, framerates that were as high as 50 in single player (or if I just load the map from maplist) to 5 - 15 fps in mp, depending on where I'm looking. All the details were on lowest, res 640 (if you ask why not 512, you obviously haven't tried it :)). There was a period of about a week when I didn't have internet access and it's possible I made a change then that wasn't immediately obvious, but all I did was to go back through single player to get all the medals. I changed display drivers from the latest to a few of the older Detonators with no luck and I hope someone might have found some kind of a solution that might work.
Specs:
PIII 784, 256RAM, TNT2, DSL connection.
Cheers.

yeah, his video card sucks, but it's the same as mine and I can run the game on medium textures and get 35 fps outdoors and 70-90 indoors. Except for the crossroads, of course. I get about 25 outdoors on that map, depending on where I'm looking. But yeah get a better vid card if you can, I would, but If I spent money on a vid card, I would have to resort to food stamps for a few months.

The thing is, it worked perfectly well before. If only as an intellectual exercise, does someone have a possible explanation/solution?

a few days ago, my game was slowing down a LOT, even on low textures. I was getting about 15 FPS on the crossroads, even indoors. Naturally, this ticked me off. So I defragged my hard drive, configured some crap in msconfig, and restarted. My game went back to normal. Then later that same day, it was really slow. I restarted, and it was all good again. Rudedog suggested that it might be because people are hacking into the game, it is screwing up the FPS for lots of people. If you defrag and it still sucks, then I don't know what to tell you, because the same thing happened to me last week.

I've been having a ton of lag/low FPS issues. I thought it was just me, but it seems like it is a general internet problem over the last few days.

Do you have a USB connection? I also suffer from low FPS which I think my USB ADSL connection is partly to blame, I believe they're a bit of a processor hog.

I doubt it, but it's quite possible that how much bandwith you have to use for the game, may reflect how many FPS are shown. Like I said, I doubt this though.

Yup, I have a USB connection. I've thought of that too. Is it better if I switched to the Ethernet version? Hmm...considering I used Ethernet for cable, and it worked fine...I'll try it and get back to you (if you're interested).
Thanks for the inspiration.
In the meantime, I'll try defragging/scandisc.

Did U mess in bios at all. I did a bios update and had to redo memory setting to get my fps back. Something to do with ddram timing. But same symptoms'

My framerates are definitely worst when I'm online, so I figured that maintaining a connection is taking resources away from running the game.

Arrgh!! Can you imagine, with a GF4 4200, it still chugs merrily along at <15fps. This leads me to conclude that the graphics card is not the issue ("no duh" - yeah I know).
I'll take a look in the BIOS but I doubt that's the problem, haven't touched that in ages. I did, however, notice that the console is constantly filled with "CG_MakeBulletTracer max limit exceeded" message. Has anyone ever noticed that before? It didn't use to to happen, now that I think about it.
