Making loading screens

I already have seven pictures I want to use for the loading screens of the seven stock maps. I downloaded a pk3 that changes the screens earlier so I copied the file structure and resized them to the sizes the ones in the mod were. When I try to use them, though, the loading screen is just white. What am I doing wrong?

Your picture needs to be a 512 x 512, 32 bit tga picture with an alpha channel (layer)!

Stupid question, but how do I add an alpha channel? I have it resized and in the correct format, so that's the only thing I need to finish it.
