Default Dedicated Bandwidth?? - 11-27-2002, 11:47 AM

I'm currently pricing out DSL service. I was wondering, does anyone have a datasheet on how much bandwidth is used per connected client?? or is there a general rule like xK upload = x amount of connections. I would really appreciate any experiences anyone has had with an in-house dedicated server. Thanks for your Time.

You want to know what each user's bandwith will put out against your DSL connection if you host a server?

You can't really figure out ahead of time how much each client will use in Bandwidth. If you want to run a server from your house get the most Upload that your DSL provider offers, if you can afford it.I ran a 8 man Sniper Only server for 5 months from my house with very little problems, but my U/L speed on dslreports.com is always hitting atleast 680.Also remember when your running a *ded* server from your house you won't be able to do any other D/L.The server will take up everything you need. If your thinking of spending an extra 40 to $75 to make your home DSL good enough to run a server then just order one from a good company.I go through http://www.xgameservers.com now.I pay them $50 for 12 man room and get to use all my bandwidth here at home again.

Dobolina----go here and read Rudes Guide to MAxrate:
http://www.mohadmin.com/nuke/modules.ph ... age&pid=18

Now you work the formula backwards a few times to see how much bandwidth will handle various numbers of players. You need to use at least a maxrate of 8000 to run a good game.
#players * maxrate * 8 = uploadSpeed.
10 players * 8000 * 8 = 640k Upload speed!
6 players * 8000 * 8 = 384k Upload speed!

You can reduce the maxrate but youwill pay for it in choppy gameplay. 9000 is the default, 3000 is what 56kers run at.
This is the theory behind it, now you are at the mercy of your ISP. Can they really guarantee that kind of connection?? They love to oversell their bandwidth (much like the airline overboking flights)!!!
