PC vs Console -
01-03-2003, 05:19 PM
I have been arguing about this topic to some of my friends, and it seems im the only one who thinks PC are better, IMO. But heres the deal. I will agree that when it comes to sports, racing, and fighting games, and RPG, the console systems win.
But everything else, its PC. Strategy, simulation, FPS, and so forth, are better on PC.
But the one topic im really trying to convince my friends is the FPS games like MOHAA, Halo, Ghost Recon. I dont care what anybody says, there is no way in my opinion that the same FPS game thats on a PC and console, would be better on console, no way.
Halo will be better on PC when it comes out.
MOHAA, not even a comparision, PC all the way.
Ghost Recon, PC no doubt about it.
Just some examples.
Heres why i think PC is better for FPS games
1. Controls! Cmon, controller doesnt even compare to mouse & keyboard!
2. Graphics! As nice as the XBOX is, it cant compare with high-end PC systems. Plus how many people have HDTV? PC have monitors, much sharper than TV, everyone has them, so again PC wins.
3. Multiplayer! Ok consoles have come a long way, with online play. But still its long way from even comparing to PC. How many of u like playing split-screen? Not to many. PC wins again.
4. Sound! Ok here it can go either way, consoles do get surround sound, and so do PC games, this would be a tie.
And so u know, i do own an XBOX, Gamecube, N64, SNES, Genesis, and NES. So i have my share of console experience. And i do have 4 PC LAN connection that i enjoy when friends come over.
Unlike my friends though, there in this XBOX fanatic thing, that its the best thing in the world. And they dont play any games other than Starcraft on PC, so its hard to convince them which is better cause all the play is console systems.
So anyways, bottom line, which is better for FPS, console or PC?

Until the console has a key board and mouse, PC will have the best shooters. The only good console shooters I can think of, off the top of my head are: Goldeneye, Metriod Prime, Halo, and Perfect Dark.

Seems to me that either you are a spoiled bastard or you earn a lot of money..
Anyway, of course console versions wont compete with a PC but that is providing you have a high end pc. Not everyone has an HDTV you say, true, but not everyone has a monster pc that can support todays games without an upgrade or driver download or phone call to tech support or a tweak here and there and a defrag and being told on a forum to reformat your computer or wait for a patch...
You put in the game, switch the console on and thats it.
It doesnt take bill gates to know that an amd athlon 2200 has more processing power than a 700ish xbox.
For FPS, you cant beat a mouse and keyboard, but i enjoyed playing halo having a trigger button, and analog pads are handy for controlling movement on racing games.
Personally i am much happier with a console for games than using my PC. Braodband isnt available where i am yet so i dont play online much, and its nice having friends around for a multi tap on a console, sit around have a few drinks and a laugh.
The plug in and play of consoles makes my gaming a happier and stress free one.
I do have to ask though, seeing as you are biased towards PC games over consoles, why do you even own a console in the first place, let alone 6??

Those games are great. But again, throw them on a PC, and get a mouse and keyboard, then tell me which its better on. PC is the unbeatable, unless like u said they get a mouse and keyboard. But the wont ever, so PC will always be better.

Because im not biase with PC. I love console systems, dont get me wrong. I just enjoying almost finishing Metroid Prime, and i have to admit its one the best games i have ever played. I just think overall, PC has the advantage over consoles in FPS. Im doing this so i get more opinions on this topic, so when my friends come over they can read your guys posts.
Do i make alot of money, not yet. Actually i would have loads of money if i didnt buy my 87 GTA, but now its payments and bills. As far as high end PC, heres my system as of now:
1000MHz Pentium III Processor
100MHz Front Side Bus
256KB On-Die Cache
384MB PC-100 SDRAM
Nvidia Geforce 4 4400TI 128MB
Creative Sound Blaster Live Sound Card
30.0GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
Hopefully within 2 months it will look like this for about $600
2800+ AthlonXP Processor
333MHz Front Side Bus
384KB On-Die Cache
512MB DDR-400
Nvidia Geforce 4 4400TI 128MB
Creative Sound Blaster Live Sound Card
30.0 GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
So its not fair to say u have a low-end PC and compare a game on an XBOX, because its not really a fair comparision. Put it this way, lets say u had the XBOX, and to the right of it u had a high-end system with the same game, and someone told u go ahead and play the game on both systems and tell us which is better. Then thats a better comparison, cause im just comparing the games, for what they were made to play on, on high end PC systems. Putting it on a low-end system puts a handicap on it, which is like say, "oh then take out the 700MHz chip inside the XBOX and put a 200MHz chip to compensate for the low-end system"

Depends on your outlook.
Console games generally look better than pc because the games are being developed for a fixed spec set. With pc's this varies left and right and graphically games on the pc usually don't look as good as their console counterparts because the developers can;t go as mad as they can with a console.
In terms of control pc's are the leaders for fps, flight sims and racing games, consoles are far better for basically ecery other style of game because the controllers are usually better.
xbox is online and gamecube and ps2 are "unofficially" online with a few games. Pc's had an advantage in this area but xbox live seems to be gaining momentum.

Ok i get what you mean now. Like GTA for example. both shit graphics on console and pc, but great playability on both. I prefered the console version though because of the controller.
FPS (and resisting the use of saying "ownz") are easier to play on PC simply because of mouse and keyboard, as most people agree.
I will however be buying Operation Flashpoint when its out on xbox, and i have it for PC.........but thats just a low end pc issue freak:
While OFP is great on PC, even got it running well on mine, I love having a trigger button on console pads. Make the experience of waiting for an enemy to come into your sights and you pull the trigger instead of "click" on the mouse....

When it comes down to pc vs consoles its a hard thread in store. No-one can really say fps are shit on consoles as halo proved that "fact" wrong over a year ago.
Halo will probably not be better on the pc, even if it is we wil be getting our jaws dropped with halo 2 a few months after the pc release of halo.
In terms of control i would say someone good at the xbox version could prolly beat someone with the pc version.
Consoles rarely crash pc's crash regular etc. Thers too many factors u can weigh into this.

Xbox is running a version of the win2k kernel, and xp is basically a graphically updated version of 2k.

I find it hard to believe 2 people with the same skills, and the one on the console will win. I just try to vision myself, and vs a clone of me, and theres no way id be able to outplay myself on the console. But then again some people, play or are more used to console controls, but not me. Mouse and keyboard are better for me. Then again i cant see console vs PC players coming soon, i thought Halo would have that, but there not gonna do that, too bad.
Ya Jedi Outcast is better on PC, if u have at least mid-range PC. I mean thats the only downside to PC is if u have a good one. I think thats where the majority of people tend to lean to consoles cause of having a low-end PC.
I know it must not be great, ive been playing like a mid-range PC, and im all for it. Ive never have had the most powerful PC on the market, but maybe in 2 months i'll play a little catch-up with the market and upgrade.
Halo will be better IMO for XBOX if u compare it with a high-end system. Its gonna have improved graphics, better controls, more maps, weapons and vechiles, and multiplay will be better which i hear will support 32 people. True it probably wont get much hype cause Halo 2 will be coming out. But if they came out with Halo 2 for PC and XBOX at same time it would be different story. Downside to Halo is that its been out for awhile so its not as hyped as it was when it first came out, so the PC version will suffer in that regard.

Sorry to change the subject a little HALO for pc will have more weapons?? I thought one of the whole points of HALO was to have limited weapons so it didnt turn into a shooting fest. No doubt the idea is so it appeals to the PC fan base hake:
