Making your cpu run faster than its supposed to. ie: your cpu runs at 1.4ghz and you overclock it 100mhz to 1.5ghz.

It is turning up the speed of your cpu, gpu, front side bus, etc. to make them faster. You are basically increasing the clockspeed, i.e. overclocking. It is not for the faint of heart. You can burn up you processor, mobo, etc. GPU (video card) oveclocking is some of the simplest and safest. You will not burn up a gpu, you will just make it unstable, then you can back it down.

Processor overclocking is a little more touchy, but with the right knowledge and patience, it can pay off with relatively low risk. Typically, you bump up your front side bus.

Processor speed = fsb x multiplier

xp2200 = 1800 khz = 133 fsb X 13.5 multiplier (roughly)

To overclock it you bump the fsb up (slowly!!!) in BIOS. Each point you bump it up it increases your processor speed by a factor of 13.5 . hardcore overclocking involves unlocking the multiplier, which is a physical mod to the processor itself and is not reccomended unless you realy enjoy that kind of thing and have moeny to replace your processor qithout blinking.

Overclocking adds heat, lots of it is some cases and processor and case temps need to be closely monitored. You need good cooling, lots of it and definately not the heatsinks and fans that come with retail processors. With good cooling comes noise, unless you get very expensive fans, water cooling, or refridgeration cooling. The latter two can produce very impressive overclocking speeds.

If you want some specific info, let me know. Video cards are real easy to oc.

Why do I find this hard to believe.

The safest way to overclock is to make sure your PC has good air circulation, and is always cool. If you plan to overclock, you should first get a temperure readout of the inside of your PC, then try to lower that temp. with more fans, or better air circulation. IMO, leaving the case open with a small home-room fan always works.

If you are a real enthuseist, you can upgrade your cooling to water. Using a water-cooling system can benefit your PC in many ways: Overclocking, longer lasting hardware, etc. They can run from $100 to $300. There's some places that sell PC's with them already installed (http://www.xoxide.com/watcoolcas.html)

If you are super-rich, go for a freon-cooling system. It uses the substance found in "canned-air". They run for about 2 grand just for the system, no PC parts. oOo:

Well, overclocking over 1 GIGAHERTZ LIKE YOU DID without proper cooling can cause things like this to happen, foo!

Kernel32.dll error = BAD. Try to apply the newest Service Pack to renew the file, hopefully that will work.

joe, i hear the dumbest thing you can do is open your case to your computer..never open your case to your computer, that will make your fan work harder, and thus make your computer even hotter
