Alright, well since MSN is a piece of crap ISP, and our year contract is up, we want to get new internet, I was wondering if this is good. Well, Comcast has taken over AT&T in our area, they have cable service now, and this is what it says on their site:

Price for 1.5Mbps/256Kbps Comcast High-Speed Internet service is $42.95 per month for Comcast cable customers.

Now, this right here pisses me off, with MSN, we have 256K/256K for $39.99 a month. If Comcast is offering that fast, for that cheap, than MSN is more bullshit than it already is. Going down at least 3 times a week, 25 kb/sec download, and 150-200 ping in games. Now, how fast would 1.5mbps be? Seems like a shitload to me. I'd really like to get this, and I see nothing wrong with it, anybody have problems with Comcast for a cable service, if anyone has it?

I have that exact Comcast servce you just described. While AT&T was switching over there were some problems, but it seems to be all good now. Download speeds are great, and I can get 100 pings in servers on the other side of the country, which aint bad. I would go with the Comcast, and oh, srew MSN.

Having a 1mbit line or more won't affect ping to any great affect (not over a 512kbit line at least) but it will give you approximately /10 per second downloads.

So, a 1.6mbit line can allow you to download up to approximately 160k per second, 1.6 mbit = 160kbytes (bloody fast). This is simply taken from the formula that every byte is made up of 8 bits of information, with 2 bits between each byte as a spacer. So you have 10 bits for each byte.

Remember, though, that download rates are always capped by the source's upload rate, so if you're downloading from a 56k line you'll still only get 5.6k max download per sec.

Wish we could get 1mbit+ lines for that kind of price here...

In the UK, for a 512k DL and 64-256k upload line, it costs a minimum of £26.99 (or thereabouts). Mine costs £29.99 with 50 mbs webspace. That's approximately $50 a month.

Mind you, pings in this country are always awesome so it's kind of worth it if you're a gamer. I've actually seen my ping go down to 1 once

Dang, that's nice. I'm going to hopefully be getting this, although it says other charges may apply, assuming that's installation, etc. Might be able to get a deal for our area too.. And yes, It's been sad for me when I was playing games with people from overseas on servers here in the U.S. and their pings were better than mine.

Yeh, I'd like a bandwidth benchmarking program, if possible, as well.
