Just tried Spearhead, my first impressions... -

Right, look here those of you who clicked on this thread to come to bash me for posting on something that's old and already discussed 300 times.
I don't care. I know it has.
I've been on this forum for a bloody long time so I reserve the right to spam on it unreservedly.
Ok. Got that out of the way.
I have a slightly different view as I have taken this long to buy SH and give it a try. I've seen all the bashing and cursing of SH and was expecting the game to be fairly poor.
The sad thing is I only bought it because I have just about exhausted the options of standard MoH and have gotten bored of playing it, even purely with rifles.
I knew the SP was short. I knew the maps were laggy. I knew the gameplay was very different to normal MoH and I was ready to see some serious arse-dragging.
Well, after one night of playing it I'm not confident it will extend my MoH playing life beyond the release of Freelancer in the UK (next month).
It's not that it's absolutely terrible. SP is really fun, much more fun than the original MoH:AA SP. The AI has been dumbed down to a stupid level but it's so much more fun to play with a squad than it is to play Rambo style.
I'm part-way through the second mission and I am fully aware that, even on hard, I will have completed the whole thing probably by tonight, but I'll get my £17 out of it.
MP is a little dissapointing. I love the lack of leaning whilst moving, that is the best thing the game brought.
I love the Lee Enfield. Awesome weapon. I also liked the Russian rifle the name of which escapes me at this time.
I do like some of the maps, but it seems that the only ones I like are MoH:AA stock SP conversions.
This is where the game falls down for me and I know this has been stated before. The custom maps that got chosen through the competition last year.
One or two of them are great quality. The rest are, to be frank, fucking shit.
How the hell EA thought they were worthy of commercial release (and, essentially, our money) I don't know.
Some of them completely lack competent vising, leading to a completely unplayable jerky piece of crap. I only just spent £250 to upgrade my PC to something that can easilly handle all the maps in MoH that used to chug (Bridge, Omaha, etc) and now I have to put up with 15 fucking fps again!
Berlin... what the fuck? Were EA on drugs when they included this behemoth of a monstrosity in their game?
It's a bloody disaster!
The expansion is very good really, except for this one stupid fault. EA didn't get pros to make all of their maps. I could accept the butt-scooting if only their maps were efficiently made and fun to play.
Does anyone out there run servers for SH that doesn't include the laggier maps? I'd enjoy the game so much more then.
Other than that, once I've completed the SP and I've gotten bored of playing with 10 FPS again, I'll be off for good.
One good side to this is that I can take SH back to the shop and trade it in for Freelancer at a reduced price biggrin:

Russian rifle is the mosin nagant. The sp missions are ok but theyre pretty dumb as well when you look at it. For instance when u crash through the barn the germans throw in a smoke grenade and a soldier gets sent in to kill you. Does it make sense they would wanna make it hard for thier soldier to see by lobbing in a smoke nade? Just ea needed a way to show off the smoke grenades and that was it apparrently =/
The other dumb thing is u see literally a few hundred parachutes yet you end up running into 3 brits and thats it eek:
The sp missions are ok i guess but when u think about it most of them don' make much sense at all.

Looo Ydiss, sup m9 (ex-=S.A.S= Aeon here)
Things that suck moslty IMO: Leaning is disabled by default, and so is it om 90% of the online servers. But what I hate most of all....
ALLL those servers I can find on ASE (with a reasonable ping) are running in Realism mode mad:
I HATE REALISM!!!! bigzooka:

The SP missions are atmosphere over realism, I think. It's very atmospheric (if not original, I feel like I'm watching BoB again) and I'm having fun with it, despite any innacuracies.
Heya, Aeon
Yeh, that's another problem, not many servers out there to play.
Oh well, I'll still get something out of it.

Spearhead SP is kinda like Omaha, good atmospheres/scenery, but the missions are easy and straightforward.

There's a difference between buying MoH:AA/SH for the SP and playing SP.
I bought both MoH:AA and SH for the MP aspect but still play the SP missions all the way through just for principal.

Ouch, that hurt.
Well hey, I am sure you are speaking of my map..
I had nothing to do with the changing.
I thought they would improve it, I thought wrong.
I totally agree with you
Small town "stadt" has got to be the best map in the whole expansion.

poor comps cause problems -

the explainations for it's lack of success are 3 fold
1) main complaint no new objective maps.
This is by a large distance the biggest problem. Look at http://www.clanbase.com and see what's played the most.
2) crap coding means low FPS.
I am not an expert but i don't see why when i play spearhead my FPS is halfed. (It's supposed to be an expansion pack)
3) the bumming around (very annoying to shoot somone only to find instead of dying they speed up and move on their arse at high speed around the map.)
I still play it though as the objective maps are fun with the smoke nades.
And for those that do we will be running a 20 man server every wednesday night from 17:00 GMT to 0:00 GMT.

No, RUNGSI, I didn't mean your map. Thunder is one of those that I consider proffesional and certainly runs smooth as is needed.
I haven't played on it since EA got their grubby hands on it, I just spectated it (I recognised it imediately, so no need to try it out) it looked fine to me.

I knew about the lack of objective maps so that didn't deter me from buying it. It's sad that EA failed to realise that Obj is the most favoured version, but I guess they considered TOW to be so revolutionary and amazing that no one would care. Very wrong. TOW is just Omaha all over again.
The FPS issue doesn't affect me on the original AA maps at all, only the custom ones.
I have a 1.67ghz XP 2000+, 512MB DDR and 64mb Gf3 ti200 which is roughly twice as powerful as the recommended specs so to have to put up with 15 FPS on some maps is unforgivable.
The added runspeed is probably one of the reasons for perceived lack of performance as the game definitely is not as smooth as it was before. Mind you, without this, it'd take years to traverse some of the bigger maps.
By all means if Pacific is a good sequel and it doesn't require me to upgrade again then I'll probably be interested, but by that time I'll probably be into something else anyway.
