Default PEOPLE KNOW SHIT ABOUT COMPUTERS. .. - 08-04-2003, 03:55 PM

Ok, so I'm at New Horizons, taking one of SEVERAL classes over the next year (paid for by the US Government), and there are ALOT of older workers here. They seem affable enough and intelligent but then they do the one thing that shatters it to all hell -

They open their god damned mouthes. My god, why is it that older people have such a hard fucking time learning new things? We're doing Access Level 1 here, and the questions just keep on coming -

"What's a field!"
"Isn't the date a Currency type?"
"My cats butt smells, how do I reflect this on a table?"

My god. My god in heaven. THESE are the people running local businesses (I know one woman is taking this class before her staff)? I'm taking HTML, DREAMWEAVER, FLASH, ADOBE, and ILLUSTRATOR in the future and I can only imagine the fucking hell I'm going to be in.

At least theres a chick here who I wanna fuck.

Well if there is one thing I have learned from 3+ years in College, and working in an office environment, is that people focus on one field and never ever want to shy away to other things. It makes my job much more interesting and secure because I know without me (I'm the head of the IT there) if something went wrong they would have to wait god knows how long to get Network Associates in here to fix the problem, and then they would be charged like $100.00 an hour for resetting the router or something. This also applies to Professors and students. I can't believe how many times I have asked the professors questions about real-life situations and they can never answer my questions.

I would have to say also that about 80% of the students in each of my classes couldn't use a computer unless it was using AOL for the internet and Windows 98 for the OS. Although it is quite enjoyable to know that when I finally have my degree and finish my certifications that I will be ahead of most of the field. The key is to diversify yourself as much as possible, no matter what program of study you are in. I have not only real-world experience, but I have taken classes in so many different IT areas. I am a Networking major but I know Cobol, VB, Java, HTML, DOS, UNIX...I know Cisco OS and every Windows OS out there. I look at my classes, and see the kids snoring during a lecture or screwing around during a lab and think "yep there's another hopeless soul that will get out of school and wonder why they can't find a job". Hell today at my Directory Services Infrastructure class the teacher asked like 15 questions for the class and every single time they would all look like a deer in headlights, and I would have to jump in and contribute.

The problem is everyone wants a tech job but no one wants to work hard at learning what it takes.

This is why you should really consider what area you want to focus on and stick with it, do something you enjoy and not something you think will be easy because you can turn on a computer. I have seen too many kids drop out of the tech program because around year 2 it becomes too much for them to handle, mostly because they think it's too boring. They also realize that the huge projects won't get done by themselves and they actually have to do some work.

You in class now? Ask what the importance of a Distributed Database and why attributes are important. Oh and ask what the difference is between primary and candidate keys. I promise you'll sleep right through.

I believe you are mistaken. That would be the the hopeless soul that I end up on the phone with everytime I call tech support.

Unfortunately they just changed the test again, I am still a member of the academy and have seen that the layout is now totally different then last year. It looks like they are breaking up the 3rd and 4th year classes. I think you took it in HS correct? I'm not sure if those classes prepare you for the CCNA to tell you the truth. Did you have to do the case projects for all 4 semesters? I'm working on my CCNP right now because too many people are certified CCNA, which sucks because now the tests are much harder. Too many people got off easy.

There is always one major idiot in each class that either asks too many questions, thinks they know more then the teacher, or is generally just a friggin pain in the ass.

I have this one kid in my arguments class that since day one has not stopped talking about absolute bullshit. He makes up these ridiculous lies that are so blatently false everyone in the class laughs at him. The professor keeps joking with him that he's gonna switch him to English I by mistake, and he asked someone to bring in duct tape to shut him up.

One time the Prof asked if anyone has gone sky-diving, everyone was silent and then right when he went to change subjects, the kid says "oh yeah I went before, but a really long time ago" He's like 20 years old. hake: So then the teach says "oh but it was ass-to-balls right? Tandom jumping or whatever" and the kid agrees, but once the teach sees that he is making fun of him he says "oh no I was by myself".

I want to strangle someone in each of my classes evil:

Remember ED,
When we were your age they didn't have computers. "Software" wasn't even a word. LOL

I'm in the IT business so I have to know the stuff NOW. If you asked me what a "field" was back then I would've said the place where you put your cows! A table is a place where you eat dinner!! biggrin:
