Default MODDED PS2 - 08-22-2003, 01:22 PM

Best. Thing. Ever. Will no theres sex, but I'll be damned if it aint up there. I actually had an old PS2 that I had modded a year ago, but it only worked on CD-R's and you had to use a Gameshark to make it actually boot games. . .yea, more difficult than giving your girl an "O" and not as satisfying.

So my old PS2 sat on the shelf and collected ALOT of dust. Then I start seeing the games that have been coming out lately - Silent Hill 3, MC2, Kingdom Hearts, MGS: Substance - and I thinks to myself. . .I gotta have that shit. So I take my shitty Ps2 to San Fran, and get it modded, but the guy is telling me the laser is weak as hell (its this way on MOST v4 ps2's and below) and that it wont work well - if at all. He wants to remove it I say - fuck it leave it in lemme try it. Laser is all shot to shit. DOesnt work. At all. So, I say fuck this, take it to EB games, they dont check it, just make sure it has the warranty sticker still there, and bam - 100 dollar credit. Get new refurbished ps2 for 40 bucks. Get my chip placed in new ps2 and HUZZAH! - Silent Hill boots right up. Vice City boots right up. Def Jam Vendetta. . .you get the picture.

One little chip saving me hundreds in dollars.

If anyone has a ps2 (and you're probably a mormon or Amish if you dont, but then if you were Amish how could you be on the internet - did you make a broadband received out of mud and sticks? oOo: ), this is by far the best investment you can get. All it requires if a modchip which can be gotten for as little as 20 bucks. I recommend a Magic 3.6 (what I have) or a Messiah2 Pro. The only other thing is finding someone to solder for you, but there's websites where you can locate a solder whos hopefully close to you so you dont have to mail your machine (no way was I doing that). It's also recommended that you get a DVD Burner (which can go as cheap as 100 bucks), but its not neccesary since alot of the games have "kits" that are made to rip out things (FMV sequences, looping the same background music, etc.), but the gameplay and graphics remain UNCHANGED, all so you can fit it on a CD-R and burn it with your burner (again who DOESNT have a burner). It's nice to have a 1:1 backup of a game so that you get EVERYTHING, but if you dont have that kind of cash you dont need it. As far as where to get games - well if you were one of those folks who had to change your MOH registery setting to ".200" then you already know.

The only problem is the community OBVIOUSLY only supports "backups" which is perfectly legal, so getting help on burning games u dont own will only get you laughed at and kicked in the balls.

So, final verdict - mod your fucking Ps2!

Sweet, man.

When I first read that you "modded" your PS2, I thought you put running lights underneath it and a big fucking fin on the back. HAW HAW!

What do u mean messed up? If its messed up its likely youd waste money (like I did) having it installed. The only thing that really needs to work WELL is the laser so that it can read dvd medium or cd-r's. Beyond that everything is fine. I'd just recommend getting a refurbished ps2 from EB or somewhere - trade in your games, and then just get them back the "smart" way.

An aquaintence of mine modded his XBox. When you insert a game it stores the entire contents of the disk on the larger HD he installed. If you boot it up without a disk you get a menu of the stored games. Pick a game from the list and you're off and running.

I couldn't tell you much more than that since I haven't been able to track him down since I saw it last... the bastich.

I SERIOUSLY considered this since I want to play KNIGHTS bad, but I can wait another couple of months for the PC edition.

With the HD thing, from what I undersand you can store games on it or save states I'm not too sure. Either way youd still need a modchip to read the backupped game.

And WADE, get a new ps2. It cost about 60 bucks to replace a laser, and the v4 and under lasers are shit so youll ALWAYS have those kinds of problems. Even if you get a used one, as long as the laser works youre fine.

Nothing more satisfied than burning a copy of Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution popping it in, and kicking the shit out of my neighbor.

I have never been much of a console person, but I gotta admit that the modded xboxes i have seen are pretty tight.

KotOR? That's a great game. It took me 53 hours and some change to beat it the first time with a Light Side character. I'm playing through a second time now with a Dark Side character. The game is different enough - between conversations with NPC's and quests - to play it twice.

It's got me all hyped up for Jedi Academy.

Same. The only thing I did to mine was put that ROM chip in it, so that you can play japanese imports and CD-R games, like Ed said. If any of you love WCW/NWO: World Tour or Revenge for N64, get Def Jam: Vedetta. It plays exactly the same, but with better graphics, and so on.

Nice going Ed. I have modded both my Xboxes as well as my brother Hollywood's xbox. been wanting to do my kid's PS2 but there are so many mod chips. for all the different versions of ps2s

I just read an article that you can run unsigned code on the PS2 with a saved game hack. If I find the article I will post the url.

For all you xbox hackers out there. check out

Give me a shout if you looking for some good IRC channels or some very reliable news groups( via pm or email ).

Introduction
--

I have released a binary and source package that exploits a flaw in the PS2's
handling of a special configuration file. This configuration file, named
TITLE.DB, is accessed from the PS2 PS1 driver (located at rom0:PS1DRV).

To make a long story short, the exploit allows anyone with a memory card and
a valid, legal PS1 disc to hijack the boot process and run any piece of code.
Absolutely no modification to the system is necessary to use the exploit (my
only working PS2 is not moddded, and I have developed and tested the exploit
on this machine). All one really needs is a way to send the files to the
memory card to enable the exploit.

<one pargraph gist>
PS1DRV parses a file called mc0:/BXDATA-SYSTEM/TITLE.DB (the X represents the
PS2's region code) to load graphic parameters for the PS1 game that was loaded
from the disc drive. There is a catastrophic buffer overflow in the parsing
routine that allows one to overflow the stack and execute arbitrary code by
rewriting the $RA register. If we load up our own TITLE.DB, with an entry for
every PS1 disc that we want to trigger the exploit, then we can take over the
PS2 boot process as soon as the disc is recognized and PS1DRV is executed.
</one paragraph gist>

The file exploit.c will have to serve as documentation on the exploit for
now, since I've been rushing to get this out and in people's hands.

If you use PS2 Independence for Evil - I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE.

All of the distributed source code is licensed under the Academic Free License
version 2.0. My copyrights _must_ remain intact if you choose to redistribute
the source package.

I'm looking forward to comments/criticisms about how the code can be improved,
and also creative uses for the exploit.

Using titleman
--

titleman allows you to create, add, and delete title entries from the TITLE.DB
file.

titleman supports to following options:

-c Create a new TITLE.DB file.
-a Add a title or a list of titles to TITLE.DB.
-d Delete a title or a list of titles from TITLE.DB.
-l List the contents of TITLE.DB.

-v Increase verbosity level.
-o Specify an output file (broken, don't use).

Examples:

$ ./titleman -c # Create a new TITLE.DB
$ ./titleman -a SCUS_000.67 # Add Castlevania:SOTN to TITLE.DB
$ ./titleman -a @title.lst # Add a list of titles found in title.lst to
# TITLE.DB (the '@' is required)
$ ./titleman -d PSXMAIN.EXE # Delete 'PSXMAIN.EXE' from TITLE.DB

Format of @list files
--

One title name per line. Comments are specified with ';' at the beginning of
the line.

Example:

; Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (one of my favorites :P)
SLUS_000.67

; Chrono Cross
SLUS_010.41

Further thoughts

Oh, if you or your company are looking for a low-level PS2 or GC hacker, I am
available for immediate contract work or other offers. My e-mail is the best
way to contact me.[/quote:544a9]

Screw all that. I spent 60 bucks so I didnt have to worry about Binary's. oOo:

Theres great debate on whether or not it will actually boot ps2's since it exploits only the ps1 drivers to run the code.

And the next-gen mod chips (Magic, Messiah, and DMS series) all work on all platforms - except for some mutant JAPANESE PS2's - but its a matter of makings ure u actually have a GOOD ps2. I learned that lesson well.

Most of my games I get either off an AOL Chatroom - or irc. No news groups since comcast has none of their own and forces u to sign up for Giganews which has a 1gig dl limit a month. Kingdom Hearts alone was 2 gigs. GG Comcast.
