I've made it a habit to buy widescreen since I started buying DVDs...I never have bought a fullscreen DVD in my life.

I have a fullscreen 27" TV, but I still like the wider screen and stuff, even if the two bars on the top and bottom of the screen may annoy poeple; I guess I just like the whole picture, even if it doesn't fill up your TV.

So, in my opinion, go with the widescreen version.

Widescreen is so much better, because films are originally shot in either 1.85:1 or 2.35:1. Because TV's are generally square, the films were cropped to properly fit them on screen. This results in scenes being incomplete to the viewer, although you wouldn't know this being a casual viewr at the time. This was before widescreen became so popular on laserdiscs The way around this is something called pan-and-scan, which physically moves the center of the screen from side to side on wide shots to give the viewer the entire scene. If you are sharp-eyed, you can pick this out and it is really annoying.

Here are some comparisons, and this is why you should never buy full screen again.

I can't afford a widescreen TV right now, but all of my DVD's are widesrcreen and I don't mind the black bars on my 32". It's funny, because when Laserdiscs first started doing it I hated the letterbox format, but once I started getting used to it, I didn't even really notice the black bars and haven't gone back since. Every time I see a movie on tv that is pan and scan, I get disgusted. It looks like crap, you sometimes get the entire scen but it is panned back and forth. You lose like 40% of the film on 4x3 TV's.

I can't afford one either. I wish I could afford a nice 50"+ plasma to hang on the wall, but no. Not gonna happen anytime soon.

I don't really mind the bars at the top and bottom either, I just preferred to not have them since my TV is only a 27". Now that I know how much it's "formatted to fit your screen" it'll be widescreen all the way from here on out.

Most plasma TV's look like shit anyway. It's going to be a couple of years before the technology is there to provide high resolution plasma TV's, and they'll end up costing a lot more then you can afford. Widescreen HD TV's are starting to get cheaper, so hopefully within the year I'll be able to get one.
