Just reading posts like "Youth today" and shit on the board...
As always a fan of history (Rome Total War in September, baby!), i like to think it gives us something of a gateway look into our future, cycle breeding cycle breeding cycle.
So, if anyone can bare to listen to a possible opinion, actually like open their mind and engage in any, just slightly, educated ideas, this is your serious spot to shine. Or post naked pictures of nail-clippers. Either way i guess thats cool...
I'd just like to talk for a minute about cultural fear of youth, and your opinions on it. I really think that, in today's society, blame is everything. There must be a problem, and there must be a solution, and the solution only costs 159.95 in 7 easy payments. At the same time we better ourselves, we really sort of enter an endless consumer cycle...but thats outside the point. Is First-world culture afraid of children? As we've seen news reports shift the blame for bad children from sports to television to video games right onto bad carpetting, is the implied message that everyone in society should be AFRAID of their children?
Really, i feel Michael Moore has hit on the vein of news being used to terrorize, but then ultimately he ends up sidetracked in order to convince everyone to help him make ANOTHER 100 million while he bashes the country that made him as great as he is today. Television, especially the news, is being used to present you with *terrifying* problems that can only be fixed by pouring more money into home security and better cars and snugger mattresses etc etc. The big craze, really, seems to be to shift focus onto bad children. Encouragement to utterly control your children's lives has seen playgrounds derelict, childhood hideouts abandoned, even plain backyards left untouched. Parents strive to keep their kids inside their houses so they're safe from the *scaaaaaaary* outsides. Then, the kids sit and watch tv and play games. So we get scared of the games. But more importantly, we get scared of the children themselves. They're killers, with guns and crazy brains. We want to lower the youth criminalization ages so we can catch these vile scum before they have time to realize that what they did is wrong!
In Roman society, much the same thing occured. Youth was abhorred, the best compliment a young person could receive was being compared to an adult, and old age was seen as the peak of a mans life. Children who did exceedingly well were looked upon poorly, and often times could even be subject to fierce indignations at the hands of Praetorians (city guards). While Rome sought to outlaw boy-heroes, to keep its young tough and mature like they should be, we find that all the REAL boy-wonders, like Caesar or Pompey, were only trying to fit their way into the bosom of the establishment. They wanted nothing more than to gain the glory they couldn't wait the years to receive, and ultimately it cost Rome everything.
Thats a huge mouthful to say, but i think what i'm trying to say is that we've created a culture where we tell everyone to look young, but to actually be young is to be feared and, really, hated. I mean just think about the looks teenagers get from security guards when they walk through malls. Sure some of them are deserved, but if thats the case, security guards should be eyeing everyone else just as equally.
Whats the future in admonishing youth? Whats the point in lowering criminal prosecution age limits? Seeing as how most of this board is under 18, i'll ask: Are parents afraid of you? Does being regarded as being potential killers not hurt you a little when you play a game innocently? Is there anyone here who SUPPORTS a culture that treats children like loaded weapons?
(EDIT: How many people are just fucking reading this and going "Fuck that...thats WAY too long" ... maybe i just shoulda posted a pic of my nipple ... only one of them... which reminds me, if someone wants to host a goddamn pic of me they CAN... nothing below the belt.)

why even try this here ? The amount of thinking that goes into posts in threads like these is limited at best here. Your just going to get more conservative views on how beating your kid, or throwing a 10 yr old in jail will solve all of our problems. "I agree with you in all regards, but here....its a waste of time.

good read albow.
i dont have much to say, other than i guess children are seen as a minority. we are misunderstood, and when something is misunderstood or not known - the mind tends to go off of what its seen/heard/etc.. thats when predjuices, stereotypes, and whatever else come into play. all around were portrayed to be something to fear (in tv, news, etc.) and thats what sticks. just a random thoguht to add to the mix

ha- thats longest post i've acually read word for word... i found it quite interesting...
Adults are worse for murdering than children... look on the news - every day you'll find something simular to - "man killed wife", "woman killed husband", "man killed work colleauge" etc. Its not often that you see "14 year old boy killed parents" etc.
Just to go onto stealing... although i'm not sure exactly what age range your talking about - I work in a shop (small grocery store), and most shoplifters we catch are over 18 probably around 21. Yea we have the occasional 13 year old kid nicking a chomp bar worth 10p but nothing actually worth anything.
Again - like what was said in a previous thread - this fear of children is down to the parents - if parents brought their children up to be civilized then the fear of children wouldnt be here. A bit of dicipline goes a long way.

Meh, a lot of this stems from the fact that kids these days are stupid little fucks that are influenced by tv and seem to think they can do and say whatever the hell they want and get away with it. I see 12-13 year olds walking around like they own the place, smoking\drinking and whatever. I see them shout abuse at older people and victimise others just so they can have some kind of image in their friends eyes.
I was born in 79, and in my way of thinking, people around my age have a lot more respect for people than the teens of today, when i was younger if i said something wrong or done stupid shit id get a talking to or a slap round the head. And therein lies the problem, parents these days are too fucking pussy to do that kind of thing.
If kids were brought up better they might not be influenced by the tard element so much. These days its all about image, its "cool" to do drugs its "cool" to run about the place pissed out of your mind. Kids need to learn doing whats "cool" or "in" is not always the thing to do, but usually theyre easily swayed by their friends and do it because they do it. Like a bunch of drones that can't think for themselves. And because of this teens a whole get tarred with the same brush.
In conclusion, i think parents mould their child, maybe if parents today would actually lay the occasional slap on their kids when they do wrong they'd grow up with a bit more of a clue.

Children: the new minority
hell no. Im afraid of my parents. Theyre both ex-marines, and, as my mothers attempted mugging last month proved, they still got it. I personally think that this whole thing of TV and video games taking our "sweet, innocent children" is a load of bologna. And if it is, we, the young adult generation, should turn TV towards a more productive cause: brainwash all young, uncynical, easily influenced children to become our domestic servants for the rest of their lives. I believe that a campaign should be started to this end, and allliedassault.com is the perfect medium, the perfect place to start it. Then, we can use these mindless automatonic children as our personal army, and overthrow all world governments. Whos with me? if you are, Just reply to this message in the following fashion:
I, (your name), shall devote all my resources to corrupt and destroy the free will of the new generation to my own selfish ends, till death take me, or I assume world leadership, at which time I will use everyone to my pwn selfish ends.
