My Future Comp -
11-11-2005, 03:29 PM
i've decided to can buying an xbox 360 for a while. mainly because my old pc is basically a spare parts machine. my video card i gave to a friend who had a killer pc, but no vid card. the card i had was fairly powerful for such an old weak machine, and i knew i wasn't gonna be upgrading the rest of the pc components, so i gave him my card.
my brother's dvd rom drive just decided to not work anymore, so i gave him my cd burner and my ram. the HD i moved to my nephew's more powerful pc and i've been using his pc since. so i really don't have a pc for myself, say, if my sister decides to move, or whatever....they walk away with my nephew's pc and i'm stuck with an HD and nothing else.
what i'm getting at is, instead of getting a 360, i'm gonna get a new pc instead. i saw this sweet looking pc in computer gaming world magazine and was wondering what you comp tech gee...ner...dudes think of it. here are its specs according to the magazine:
-NVIDIA nForce 4-SLI Chip Dual PCI-Express Motherboard
-Raidmax Samurai Gaming Case
-Corsair 2048MB DDR400 Memory
-Serial-ATA 250GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
-16x Double Layer DVDR/RW + CDR/RW Drive
-16x DVD-ROM Drive
-2x NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT PCI Express 256MB Video Cards powered by Xmidia
-7.1 Channel Surround 3D Premium Sound
-10/100/1000 MBps Ethernet LAN
-Optical Mouse & Multimedia Keyboard
-Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
-Free Wireless 802.11g 54MBps Network Adapter
-1 year tech support, blah blah...
-AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Processor
what do you all think? it's a total of $1800. this is the one i'm aiming for, for myself. mostly for gaming and other multimedia purposes. i just have a few questions for those in the know:
-the video card itself, is it powerful? i mean its coming with 2 of them, but i'm curious if each invididual card is powerful
-the cpu, in GHZ, how much is this amd 3000+ more or less?
-pricing. do you all think the price is just fine, a lil too much, etc.

You'd need a faster copu, the 3000+ is around 2ghz. fastest amd currently sell is the 5x57 which is 2.8ghz. Then you have the dual core variations, fastest dual core is the 4800 which is 2 2.4ghz cores.

actually im quite exited ... perfect blend of usability and a unix based operating system. sometthing ive been searching for for years. most linux versions are so unusable its sad ... but the mac is almost the pc on top of a unix based os ... perfect match. shell scripting and unix network utilities = own. the os10 is very much xp like in almost every aspect ... i dont plan on doing any gaming on it so i think its a good purchase. plus, knowing both the pc and mac is probably a good investment.

Better off with a faster cpu, for sli you really need a faster cpu. Even for a single 7800gt or 7800gtx a 2ghz cpu would be a little slow to get the most out of it.

He could hope for a good OC. 2.6ish gets rid of the CPU bottleneck for the most part.

the whole bundle sounds good though. should i buy it and maybe have'em leave out the cpu and i go and buy a seperate more faster cpu? or look for something with similar specs and pricing with a faster cpu?

3000+ used to oc really well but they don't go as high as they used to. I don't know what motherboard that thing comes with, but it probably isn't very good in terms of ocing capabilities.
Good CPU... 3700+ San Diego, 4000+, FX55, 4400+ X2...

akuma, are those expensive? i mean, would it be more beneficial if i replace the cpu or go for something faster but a lil pricier. would there even be much difference with either of those options in terms of price...oh. and should i just go with a P4 cpu?
