Default U.S backing guys who made black hawk down possible - 05-17-2006, 08:05 PM

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 25_pf.html

At todays press conference Tony Snow confirmed the report by saying:

You’ve got instability in Somalia right now, and there is concern about the presence of foreign terrorists, particularly Al Qaeda, within Somalia right now. In an environment of instability, as we’ve seen in the past, Al Qaeda may take root, and we want to make sure that Al Qaeda does not in fact establish a beachhead in Somalia. […] The United States - we will continue to work with regional and international partners wherever we can to crack down on terrorism and also to try to prevent its rising.

Do people agree with this?

Honestly, I think keeping terrorists breeding grounds from coming to fruition is a good thing. What I would ideally do is find a way to take out the warlords completely and establish a working, peaceful government so the Somalians can live without fear in a stable country. With a stable government, the country would be less and less likely to become a terrorist breeding ground. Since I know that that sort of action is unlikely, I'd have to say I think destroying al Qaeda and it's supporters is a more important action at the moment so I think continuing to fight them is what we should support.

If there even is an 'Al Qaeda' you can't just "destroy" them all...You cut the head off and two grow back...You must first work on establishing good relations between the very people that "Al Qaeda" are recruiting from.

How do you expect to promote good relations with people by flexing your military muscles? You guys should sugar-coat things a bit more...Send in a "peace-keeping" force...

It's important to note that Somalia has a U.N arms embargo so while the u.s is supplying these groups they are basically breaking international law.

Ok, you obviously didn't get it.

Why only point a finger at the US when it does something that many countries have done and isn't really a big deal anymore.

Because they've said they want to attack a country at the same time they are developing nuclear weapons.

The difference is that with Iran it is NUCLEAR weapons. I thought that would've been obvious.
