The goverment over-throw plot actually was real. Smedley Butler (one of America's most highly decorated generals - he won the medal of honor twice) was supposed to lead the coup but instead blew the whistle. He wrote a book called "War is a racket" outlining his adventures in south america and the caribbean for corporations.
