How do I go about ripping video with sound from a DVD so that the file isn't an ISO or something but rather an mpeg or supported video format that's usable in Microsoft Movie Maker?

Alright well I figured it out and was able to succesfully rip the parts of the movie I needed, now my problem is with Windows Movie Maker, for some reason it doesn't accept the AVI format saying:

[code:da28f]The file C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew\Desktop\1984.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.[/code:da28f]

What I'm trying to do now is find a way to convert the AVI file to a WMV or MPEG thats supported by Windows Movie Maker, trouble is everytime I google it I find some bullshit website with a bunch of try and buy programs that all suck. Doom9 had nothing on converting AVI to WMV just AVI to VCD/SVCD which also isn't supported by Windows Movie Maker.
