I've been playing it for a couple days ( Arrrrr matey im an internet pirate ) now. To sum it up, it's the Rome engine w/ better graphics and more unique units per Faction. If you've ever played the first Medieval expect a lot of the same features ( Crusades, Prisoners, Princesses, etc ).
Edit: Oh yeah, you can also go to the New World and fight the Aztecs.

You haven't lived until you've defended your city from an army of 2000 angry gauls with 268 soldiers (mostly archers and town guard save for one amazing unit of cavalry).
I will definitely be playing this game.

Make sure your settlements have an adequate garrison of troops. More Elite troops have higher upkeep which drains your money so try to use Militia type units which have low upkeep.
Settlements rioting too easily is on the long list of problems with Rome.

I have finished rome total war with about half the factions, on very hard, not HARD at all once you get the hang of micro managing, towards my last 20 turns i can take 30 minutes to do everything needed to be done in a single turn. Rioting is pretty easily solved, I never really let any city get away with low taxes, so when it starts to get rowdy and out of control, i bring in an army, let it revolt, and execute the population, that then guarentee's their loyalty for a good 50 + turns if you properly manage the city.
M2:TW has been fantastic so far, ALTHOUGH the collision of squads has not been quite what was promised in my mind, BUT still a fantastic game.
