Default PC won't start properly after power outtage :( - 03-23-2007, 02:25 PM

Right, just when I'd replaced my new hard drive with a new drive and everything was peachy.....this happens, FFS!!

Right, my PC was left on, no programs running and I go downstairs to eat food, then there seems to be a power outtage upstairs so the powers off, we flick our switch and I go upstairs finding it obviously turned my PC off.

I then turn my PC on and the BIOS tells me my 'primary slave failed'. I then think FUCK, open up my pc, make sure everythings plugged in, dusted, etc, turn it back on and set my CD drive (which I think is my primary slave') to last in the Boot Sequence.

Reboot and this is the stage I'm at now:

1) PC starts up
2) Goes past BIOS page fine as usual
3) Windows tells me that it crashed, would you like to start Windows normally, in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking.
4) I've chosen Normally and Safe Mode

BUT

as soon as I choose either one and hit enter, the PC freezes!

Could it be a power supply problem? I've noticed very slight noises, almost like a ticking. Hope to god it isn't my new HD as its only 2-3 days old.

I'm using my parents pc for now so please to god if you guys can help, I don't want to play Solitaire on a Dell for the week.

if it was the power supply the likelyhood that it would start at all is slim. Do you know what caused the power outage? That could inevitably tell where to look for the problem. Try plugging your parents HD in and see what happens. But first try getting into the BIOS on yours and Set boot sequences and primary and slaves that way, making sure that the jumpers on the back of the drives correspond with the BIOS. save settings and restart.

if you think one of your drives failed, unplug it and set the other one as the master.

i had a cd rom fail the other day on my parents computer and the thing would freeze up. i could get into the bios but it would look all shitty and weird. unplugged the thing and it booted up.

i agree that i doubt it's power supply with the thing booting up.

Well i've been messing about this things lately, not sure what the problem is but sometimes the stutter comes back (as mentioned in an earlier thread)

I ran memtest and it found an error on my ram. I'm running memtests now to find which of my 1gig sticks it is then hopefully replace it.

If replacing a stick of ram doesn't fix it I'll probably explode cuss:
