Is it possible to install a program onto my USB thumb drive, plug it in, and run it off the drive? Also would I be better suited to changing the file format from FAT to NTFS?

Depends on the program, some very simple ones will be fine on just your regular USB drive, but for most others, you need a U3 drive. They're slicker than shit and work quite well. And keep the the format in FAT, those work better that way since NTFS takes up too much extra to do
