Update from Rudedog and the forums. -
09-30-2007, 08:07 AM
Hey everyone, just wanted to drop in and let everyone know I'm not dead, forgotten about the place or don't care. biggrin:
Been on the road the whole damn month of Sept, in the following states, Las Vegas, Denver, Chicago, Denver and back to Las Vegas.
Besides being blacklisted from helping EA field test the so called dedicated server files, I've spent any time online letting EA know how much they screwed up Airborne!
If all goes well and I get this new sponsor for FPSadmin I will be updating the forums using vBulliten instead of phpBB.
Even though phpBB is testing or has released a newer version, back end management is terrible and the bots attacking registration is a pain in the ass.
Don't know if I can get or work a style to match but right now I would love to update this forum to something much more then just phpBB.
comments suggestions as always leave them here.
Oh and I know off topic is the place to be, but please use the game forums to talk about games we currently support. - Thanks guys.
Once the new forums go live, I would love to start pushing the site to attract new and old members back. I would need everyone's help for that.

would you be able to transfer the posts aswell? as with starting fresh with no posts would be the final nail in the coffin to this place becoming dead.

All posts, post counts everything would transfer to the new boards.
Unless I screw something up calmdown: Just kidding.
It would work this way. after purchasing a vB lic. I would test the upgrade on a backup of the forums. Test it a day or so (myself and the admin staff).
Then if that all works, I would be able to see how long it would take to move the production forums over so you guys know what's happening.
Move board to new home, add some pointers from the old forum url to the new url and bamn new board with all your info, posts, pms ready and waiting. It may not look this snazzy right off the bat, but that is something I can work on over time after the upgrade(s)
Only draw back is the forums may be a little slow while updating, xfering, moving things around and the forums will be down for the final move.

If we do transfer over please reduce blitz's (aka spamzilla) to about 5 posts.

We desperately need to update this forum, its an ancient build of forum that needs a total overhaul so I welcome the upgrade as soon as possible
The search function on here is a joke and so many functions that you see on most forums are totally absent on this board, the sooner the better

I have to question the point of doing it though, few enough people come here as it is, i doubt spending more money on upgrading the forums would make more people join. I think its a proven fact that everytime this place goes down for any amount of time fewer and fewer people return to post.
To me it seems a waste of money =/

Unless something goes terribly wrong, I don't see it going down for more then a day, I'm hoping only for a couple hours.
We would put a pointer and a page up letting people know we are upgrading the forums, so it would not be like the site was just gone for that time.
I really want to do this over the next couple days as I am off from work this whole week, minus Friday my daughters b-day.
Funny thing was, about 3 months before taking over the site, I gave away a vB site lic to a good friend who needed it because his phpBB board was hacked for the 3rd time.

It's a GSP for FPSadmin.
I think I may bring back the simple g [] [] gle text based ads in a banner of some sort as long as it's not too much of an eye sore or slows the site down in any way shape or form. That is very low on the list.
This way if anyone wanted to help out, all they would have to do is c l i ck on the G ads
All my sites, FPSadmin, FPSgameforums and my personal site landi.net are run off the same server. Basically the FPSadmin ads pay for the monthly hosting fee and support all the sites. Right now I break even and a sponsor here or there help pay for enhancements to the site via software lic. such as vB and download sections like on FPSadmin
In the long run, if I can break even, I'm happy. This way I get to host my other domains for free (landi.net) while being able to offer sites like this a place to live on.
