In the movie you see bubbles under the water. What is the cause of these? Are they from bullets under the water? Men dieing and drowning? Or Both?

I think the bubbles were from a dying soldier, desperately gasping his last breath of air from underneath the water.

I have a hard time believing that bubbles come up when machine gun bullets were shot through the water; Then again, I never even fired a machine gun...
