Itll lag so much and your ping will be so high that you will not even be able to move. I suggest getting cable!

it will be horrible and you woln't even have any fun because you are spending all of your time trying to even move and you woln't be able to because the ping is skyrocketed and that will just make the game totally miserable. I agree with the guy above me. You have to get cable or DSL in order to enjoy the game.

I agree also, Cable or DSL is the only way to play MP, 56k just kills it for ya.

I have cable now, but the game was fine on my 56k. It was very well playable with up to 8 players (with more people the lag issues began). Just look for some good servers.

Play the game with 300 ping and there will be a short ''lag'' after pressing the mouse before the weapon actually fires. That's 2015's fault. Every single decent game developer doesn't use this technique anymore. Instead, the weapon will be fired immediately regardless of the connection, and the "bullets" and hits are calculated instead. This is much better for 56klers, and has been implented by Id and Valve a long time ago. Sadly, that's not how it works in AA. Prolly cost 2015 hundreds of dial up players.

I've played on 56K, and the note above was right on. Keep the group small, and you'll do better. You can have tons of fun. You just put up with the crashes, freezes and other glitches.

I tried to figure out which weapons worked best for us slow folks. I know I'll get slammed for this, but I always found rockets to be the best. They're sort of a poor man's sniper rifle -- a great equalizer.

The fast players can whiz around. Rocket folks can do the equivalent by popping up, launching a big momma and popping down again.

The fast guys can strafe and spray a huge range of bullets quickly. They can also throw grenades faster. We compensate by launching a missle that has a large frag radius (but not as large as a grenade.)

There are ins and outs. And you'll get heckled, as I did. Oddly, the ones who complained about my using a bazooka were the ones who had high-speed modems and wanted to keep the edge. Forget them. That's like telling a one-legged man he needs to fight without his crutch. (But if I found myself in an arena of dial-ups, I switched. )

Good luck.

I just wish there were an arena just for 56K. Heard of one?

I played for Months on Dial up before I got cable. You can play on dial up just fine. You just need to learn to compensate for the lag. Lead your target a bit, and if you hear someone comming around a corner, it's best to start shooting before you see them.
Anyone who says you NEED broadband to play Multi Player is full of crap. I consistantly dominated Cable and DSL players when I was on dial up. But you will need to stick with servers running 12 players or less.

Yeah man you can play on 56k. You will get laggy bits every now and then when a lot of action is on and your sniping will be atrocious but its playable and kicks SP ass.

I never bothered looking at multiplayer for any of the games i 0wn3d cause i thought the same thing. Just dont attempt to join servers with 280+ pings and youll be fine.

playing with 56k is definately doable. i used to do it for months before i finally got cable. i know a bunch of people who are really good, and who have dial up with average pings of 180-275. you just have to learn how to deal with the lag like the others said. but yes, it is very playable with dial up, just dont try to go into a server like crow kings with 50 ppl heh. dont listen to those guys at the top, this game can be played with dial up.

it also depends on what video card, processor, ram etc. you have.

i have a friend, runs on 2ghz, 512, gf4 ti4400 and 56k quite fine.

Dialup here too, good advice up there, stick to dedicated servers with less than 10 players if you can. Get one of the "puff" mods so you can see if your hitting or not, highpingers need to confirm thier lead somehow and thats a good way. Dont try to sit and snipe, get out there and mix it up with em :P I find realism is better for me, less bullets to kill with so if I hit em a few times I'm more likely to get the kill

Another thing is to enable the built in lagometer so you can see when your spiking and if your getting lots of loss. Open the console and type

cg_lagometer 1

The display will pop up, remember, red is bad

Good luck!

Default Possible... - 08-12-2002, 11:23 PM

It IS possible.
The downsides are...

1. You'll get bitched at for high ping
2. You'll lag really bad and make other people lag
3. You won't have a fun time online...

You should get cable, dsl or +

I understand that there is a clan for people on 56k... the 56kers

they need new members, because all of the rest are going to cable. haha tells you a little something about 56k.
