Help with server requirements..I am a noob with servers -
08-18-2002, 03:54 PM
Hi
I want to set up my own Moh server and I'm wondering what the requirements are for having say 12 people on it. My connnection to the internet is throught a DSL line, 256 Kb. I have never set up a server before so I don't know how much memory or cpu power I need to have this server running at a decent ping. If you can give me some general guide lines that would be great!! thanx!!

what do you have to use as a server ??? is it going to be a dedicated server??? i have an 1.1gig tbird w/640meg ram . i seem to beabel to host around 10 players with good connections (under 130 ping)with out anylag iff people joing with over 200 ping and there is more than 7 clients things can get crappy real fast.try playing with console commands to try and avoid this when you get your server up and running one good one is sv_maxping "max amount".......good luck

daznig, chances are with your cable wont ever be able to host 12 players. Regardless of changing your rates and maxping. If your heart is set on this many players, look around for a Hosting company. Be forwarned, they are expensive. Someone else will probably be able to help you find a way to get up to 7, but I doubt any more than that. Perhaps though.

My server is good for a laugh, but it beats collecting dust in my closet. The main reason I use it is for filming in-game videos so I can have a near zero ping which helps with lag/fps issues. I do my playing elsewhere.
Intel P233 o/clocked to 266 Mhz
96 megs 72 pin simm 60 ns
2 gig SCSI drive on Future Domain SCSI controler.
Trident 1 meg video card
Realtek 8029 10Mbit NIC
Mandrake Linux 8.1 with no Xwindows to save resources...stock kernel.
Cable connection which I would swear is capped to 45-60 Kb/s
Public beta 2 of the Linux server
With all of that, (or lack thereof) I can host to about 8 people provided they're all <100 ping before anyone starts bitching about lag.
sv_fps is at 18
EDITED.... Before I used win2k..... 6 people was the cap

Herzog is running on a
Duron 800Mhz
384MB PC133 Ram
20GB 7200 RPM IDE ATA100
Windows XP Professional
Geforce 2 MX 32
768k / 768k DSL Connection (ATM encapsulated)
640k/640k real world throughput
I can host 12 broadband users without a hitch, 14 and I get lag if everyone is broadband. Sprinkle in a couple of dialup users and I could host 16 without a problem.
Figure 30k up and down for each broadband user. The server doesn't take very much ram - 40-50MB max, but it'll need a fast cpu, motherboard, and hard drive to keep everything from chugging.
I found that the server lagged when I had an ISA video card installed, so I swapped it out for the GF2MX AGP card.
Server:
Herzog - No Complaining
Uptime: 32 Days straight (last month, brought down to change locations)

Your connection to the Internet will be your bottle neck. Most modern PC will be able to handle more people then your connection can handle.
I just hope EA does something about the netcode. cry:

sorry about that, There are other issues. That you would think EA would have patched by now. There are no rumor about any patches. I have a feeling it will be fixed in the exp.
You know the one you will have to pay for. I personally will be buying it, but I'm older and can afford it. what about all the younger members who rely on there parents to purchase this game. They will be out of luck.

Out of luck? Nah... they'll just pirate the hell out of it if they feel it should have been a free patch. Poetic justice in my opinion.
