Motherboard/CPU -
08-24-2002, 11:30 PM
Ok quick question, I want to upgrade my old computer. I was wanting to use my old HD and CD drives. When I install the motherboard and cpu do I need my HD to be formatted? Or is it just a matter of switching the old one out and putting the new one in? Any suggestion on a good motherboard and cpu combo I should get? Thanks for any replies.

OFFTOPIC!!!
Yes, it does. What you SHOULD do is get your hands on a small drive (at least 2GB) and make it the primary drive, and your HD you have from your mobo NOW the slave. Load the OS to the small drive, copy all the info you need from it. THEN, once you have all your data, format your drive from your old mobo, and switch them (primary/slave), and install the OS. Copy all the data from that drive back again. Sounds weird, but read it slow.
As for the CPU/Mobo combo, how much are you looking to spend alltogether?

Probably. What kind do you have now, cuz you might need new RAM, too. Maybe a new power supply.

ive been running a MSI 845 ULTRA with a intel p4 1.8 gig...IT SEEMS TO BE A VERY FAST COMBO..i would highly recommend it...and yes...if im replacing the mother board...i would recommend a format too,,,you might as well start with a clean drive to go with the rest...this mother board will run both kinds of memory...regular or ddr....so witch ever memory you have now you can use it ....just burn the files you want to save onto A cd and replace them when you get fired up again...OR...DO LIKE JOE SAYS...BUY ANOTHER HARD DRIVE/MASTER/SLAVE/SWOP FILES/OH MAN...ANYWAY..hope it helped ya a little...BUTCHER

you need to backup all your crap to somewhere because you cannot swap a mobo without a full format/reinstall.
Epox 4G4A mobo + P4 1.8A best performace for money ive seen... buying this week. overclocks to way over 2gig.

If your running win2k or winXP you do not need a reformat. Do I recommend reformatting and starting from fresh like Joe and Butcher suggested with the second hard drive
HELL YA.
If your on a budget and cant afford the new mombo, cpu, ram and power supply along with an additional HD. Make sure you back everything up and start from fresh with your new parts.
You still can just upgrade the OS for now, but I personally recommend a fresh install in these conditions.
Some things to remember when looking for that new mombo
If you have your original Power supply, then any new ( worth purchasing )
Motherboard / CPU will need a new power supply. Should be 350Ws or over and if it cost under $30, it's not worth it. I would recommend Antec power supplies
What do I get Intel, AMD. I like Intel, but I do more then play games. For an all around good CPU. That will give you the most bang for the buck. I would go with AMD and get something along the lines of an 2000XP or above.
If you buy an Intel P4 then you need rambus ram, Must be installed in pairs
The AMD uses DDR pc2100 ram and does not need to be in pairs
My only AMD gripe is "don't get anything with a via chipset" I have had problems with them in the past. could be fixed now but I don't have much experience with them
Good luck with your upgrade.

You don't need to format, but make sure everything is set properly in the
BIOS (however obvious that is). Go with an AMD processor: can't go wrong
with power and reliability biggrin:

the thought just occured to me reading this post...i wonder how long the post would be and how many people would respond if you had one called...AMD OR PENTIUM...WITCH IS BETTER....a question like that could overload the server its self...lol...i happen to run the pentium...but all in all there probably aint 10 cents of difference in them...they both will make a box scream for mercy...BUTCHER

Keep an eye on the AMD prices and the Intel p4 1.6 -2.0
With the AMD xp2600+ just released and running at 2.133 Ghz you can expect a big drop in cpu prices. Hell the P4 2.53 dropped $250 this week biggrin:

If you're putting it into a new motehrboard i would reccomend formatting it no matter what operating system you;re using. Older mainboard drivers can cause a load of conflicts
