Default why does my server have a high ping? - 09-07-2002, 04:39 PM

why does my server illustrate a high ping on gamespy when there are sometimes 8 people there with low pings..I have a dedicated 20 man server wich never lags until now..It seems that when my servers ping is at about 750ms and over, I am not able to connect..i keep on getting "connection timed out" message...can someone tell me how i can fix my server? the servers ping should never be that high...i have 4 months with my server so i dont know much about it so can anyone tell me step by step how i can fix? thank you

What type of internet connection are you running? That is one of the biggest factors in a smooth running server. You will need lots of bandwidth to run 20 player games. If you are running this one a cable modem you will have trouble with that many players.
Go to Bandwidthplace.com and test your server's connection upload speed. Next use this formula to determine how many players you can adequately run on your server: (#players)x(max_rate)<(svr conn upload speed/8). Your max_rate is set in your server.cfg file and by default is set at 9000. If you exceed the server connection's ability to upload data to clients then you are in for some serious lag and "Connection timed out" messages.

Max framerate will also affect you. Try setting it to about 45.
