If your mod name starts with a letter less than "p", it may work perfectly. This is how it works: files are uncompressed alphabetically. When a file is uncompressed, if their contents already existed, they are overwritten; if not, there's no problem.
Thus, if you install a replacement for the default compass, the file contents are the original game files edited; if its named, say, compass.pk3, those edited files would be overwritten when the pak files are uncompressed, and thus the mod apparently doesn't work (though it's being uncompressed); you should name it user-compass.pk3 (for example) so that it gets uncompressed after the pak files thus replacing the original contents with the modified ones.
