Haven't tried this but I think I know. All you have to do is select the space you wait. Add gradient to it(horizontal gradient) then just change the opacity, Quite simple I think. cool:
Add a layer mask with the hide all option. Use the gradient tool and the foreground to transparent preset with your foreground set to white. Apply the gradient to the mask.
OK, i tried this but I couldn't get it to work, just to make sure you know what i mean, here is a sample image of what I want to do:

I want to be able to put a background behind this and have that image become more visible toward the direction the arrow is pointing.

last time i checked, there can be only one foreground
I probably could've used some quotes. You are supposed to read that as "Use the gradient tool and the "foreground to transparent" [gradient] preset with your foreground [color] set to white."
