I started learning some openGL stuff after doing a subject on computer graphics during my degree. We used C and a fairly primitive graphics library called vogle for the programming tasks. openGL is a lot easier to use than vogle was, and I believe the semester after i did the subject, they started using openGL. provided you can understand the theory behind how things are done, you shouldn't have too much trouble learning openGL.
