Well logically, that is impossible. But on a mental, social level - its not so far fetched. As for the medical claim the woman is putting forth - all opportunistic posturing. But its silly to suggest that the "effect of slavery" isnt out there - and not just Black slavery.

Even if the "effect of slavery" is out there, why are they looking for reparations from all white people? It's not like the entire country owned slaves.[/quote:e3d20]
what does this have to do with reparations?!
i swear to god whenever anyone brings up anything about slavery, everyone gets pissed at black people saying to 'put it behind them' etc... this article is simply expaining how this was addressed, and it makes perfect sense to me. perhaps it should not be associated with PTSS in any way, but it seems perfectly logical for some people to feel that their relatives were so badly abused that they themselves suffer stress from it. That is not too far-fetched at all[/quote:e3d20]
Smartest post in this thread.
Alot of ignorance has been spewed through here and this thread is up there with one of the worst. If any of you actually read the fucking article you'd understand that what is being said is not only true, but totally relevant.
What the woman is saying is that there is a variety of cultural traits ingrained in african-american society that are a direct result of years of mis-treatment from white society. What is so hard to believe about this? I think trying to relate it to Post-war PTSD was the wrong move seeing as that is considerably more intense in its trauma - but there are, naturally, reflections on incidents and events motivated by racial hatred that result in a particular way of thinking, acting and general living which translates into the upbringing of the next generation of children, PTSS is just a term - The SLAVE word is merely used as a general term to describe mis-treatment from a white majority. These issues are far more directly related to 20th century mistreatment, which maybe less common and blatantly dehumanizing than what went on in earlier centuries but it is just as effecting and influential on its 'victims.'
They're not saying that a direct link of traumatic memories between the suffered hardships of slaves and the current 21st century african-americans exists, that would be impossible, they do say that the reaction from the trauma is passed on from parent to child, generation to generation. This isn't that hard to believe when you think of it in context:
Woman is raped and beaten in front of kids, whatever changes she endures as a person in her actions and behaviour will be passed on to her kids and for whatever reason, sub-conscious or whatever, they do the same thing, and then their kids do the same thing, and so on and so on.
Its stuff that is passed on through action and in nurturing.
I'm not denying that some blacks don't use the slavery thing as an excuse - But THAT is most definitely NOT what the point of this article and is totally irrelevant and all you douches who are harping on about it should shut your fucking pissmouths, because you're making us whites look like a bunch of ignorant fucktards that jump to ridiculous conclusions over race-issues.
All of your parents were alive during the 1960s, this is just when the civil rights movement began picking up speed in regards to law reform. Think about that. Only a generation ago... of course there are going to be things that are reactions to this period. Do you think just because a few laws have changed and a few opinions towards race have been changed that all the stuff that happened before then is just forgotten?
