So my college internet sucks nuts. -

Over the winter break the IT department turned into a socialist government. Everyones ethernet is capped at 15kb. Pr0n watching has become impossible, and I can't play a game of cod:4 to save my life. What I have noticed is that the wireless network on campus isn't capped, and I am able to watch pr0n on my laptop. (Not that I do.... but sometimes that corner of the library where no one is looking looks inviting.)
Anyone know some way I could build an antenna or modify my current one to pick up the wireless signal from campus in my dorm room? I live on the 5th floor of a high rise style pillbox so even cellphone reception is shitty.

you're fucked. My school does the same shit with capping our access. If we want fast internet we have to charter it ourselves. I was going to do that this semester until my wireless card shit the bed.

loading sites and downloading things is fast here, but flash players such as youtube, collegehumor, etc are slow as shit. takes 10 minutes to load a 30 second video.

I used to have problems playing games while I was on campus. I couldn't get a ping less than 900 in any server. I could do other stuff fine though.
Man, I'm glad I'm off campus now.

Yeah, they wont let us bring in another company like comcast into the building. I'm thinking of modifying my existing antenna and pointing it out my window at the internet cafe across the way.

that's awesome. The apartment complexes here are all basically in cahoots with one internet company (the one that has been here the longest and has the most infrastructure laid down) so there is really no choice in who you get for cable and internet in most places. The result is, my roommates and I each have to pay for our own individual internet access. We aren't allowed to buy service and then split it through a router, we each still have to pay $25 a month, totaling $75 a month from the three off us for 1.5 mbs access that quite often slows and occasionally goes out...

I we just have cable & internet through COMCAST. We have a bunch of premium channels, DVR, and split everything up wirelessly through a router. $9 a month per person is not bad at all.
