I can't stand HL2 and that retarded steam bullshit. DOOM has better graphics but the play is old (unless you're an original DOOM fanatic)

Ok, humor me.....Red Orchestra is a mod to what game ??

Oringally it was for MOHAA. Then it moved to SOFII. Then it finally moved to UT2k3/4. Not sure if it has been put onto other games. oOo:

Doom 3 may have a stronger engine than HL2, but Doom 3 has the worst gameplay of any FPS I've ever played.

PS: HL2 looks better than Doom 3... all the time. But the source engine is maxed out while Doom 3 engine has shitty textures and is majorly restricted by poor people who won't upgrade.

I have played both and I think that it's easier to run HL2 than it is to run D3 so it looks better on systems that aren't spectacular. I also thought that HL2 was much better along the lines of gameplay, in fact I'm pretty sure I recall getting bored while playing D3 quite a few times.

Doom 3's gameplay is basically similar to the first game, every fps has similar gameplay in the respect you kill enemies and complete objectives. As for hl2 looking better than doom i disagree, to me hl2 looks more like a cartoon than anything, thres nothing that "real" looking about it.

Doom 3 on the other hand the enemies have a real 3d look to them and look a ton better than the enemies in hl2. You just have to see an imp emerge from the shadows the way the light reacts to the character looks realistic, gives the game more depth. In hl2 that kind of thing is missing.

Just looking at this screen
http://www.nvnews.net/images/news/200408/doom3_3.jpg

In that the imp looks 3d, it looks like it has some kind of substance to it, it looks as though it could be real. Compare that to combine troops in hl2, they look nice yeah but comparing the graphics in hl2 to doom 3 is like comparing a warner bros cartoon to a high end cgi movie.

You're right about the engine being in its infancy though, its current hardware thats limiting it. Maxed out the engine would look amazing whereas source has already blew its load.

I think doom3 and HL2 are both equally good in graphics, and shit, but hl2 just feels better

Doom 3 has disgustingly obvious low poly models, the textures look like garbage if you get within 3 feet of them, the bump maps are poorly done and its impossible to run on high without a godly computer. Plus from what I can tell Doom 3 doesn't really have any mods, two pages as a matter of fact on ModDB while Half Life 2 has 22 pages. I will give Doom 3 credit for the map editor, that was fun to use but it still has nothing on Hammer.

On a side-note why do people hate Steam so much? I've had no problems with it and I've been using it since it came out. I've played Half-Life mods before Steam and I really don't care for WON anymore than I do for Steam. However not being to play games without getting on-line or connecting to Steam is a little oOo: but it's never really been a problem for me.

The models are low poly due to the game being playued on lower end pc's and to hardware constraints. If the models were like 6000+ polys it would impact performance even more. Same thing goes for the textures, the textures have bumpmapping and specular highlights, most textures in this game are not one texture its around 3 layered on top of one another. Again another hardware constraint, if the textures were higher res it would most likely flood the 256mb of ram on todays graphics cards.

Give me a clue on how bumpmaps are poorly done? This is one of few games that uses bumpmaps a shitload, theres no way theyre poorly done.

Take a look at these and tell me the bumpmapping in doom 3 is badly done,

Full settings, actual fps was a constant 60 but it hops down when i take screens.

Compared to this, no specular, no bumpmap and no shadows

hl2 owns. the source engine is an adaptable engine. so they can upgrade it in the future. When HDR comes out you will see how powerful the engine is.

HDR is out and didn't help Far Cry or the Crytech engine at all.
