Default Speeding Tickets....... - 07-03-2004, 03:22 PM

I have this friend in Austraila, and He just told me about the ticket system there. He said they fine you based on your ability to pay. ie...Bill Gates goes 5 over, gets hammered for 5 mil, poor guy go 30 over, pays $100. I don't know, it kinda makes sense, but seems too overdone to me. What do yall think????

I don't think one person should be more penalized for breaking the same law just because they have more $$. Everyone kows the traffic laws and everyone decides for themselves if they are willing to risk a ticket. If you can't pay the fine, don't do the crime.

That system is in parts of the Netherlands, not Australia.

not really; $100 for a pro athlete or CEO is not the same as $100 for me (college student); so in fact you aren't punishing people equally for breaking the same law if they pay the same amount of money, rather a percentage is a more logical deterrent

I'd be mad about a $100 ticket if I had $200 in my bank account or $2000.

Still. So you're saying if bill Gates murdered someone he should get life in prison, but if someone making 25 grand a year does it he should get what community service. It is all the same reasonings behind it.

that's different, being incarcerated is equally tough for anyone, it don't matter if you're rich or poor; but a monetary fine's impact on a person is inversly proportional to their salary.
